Flow Journey
When did you begin your journey into the flow arts, and how were you inspired to start?
I began hoop dancing Oct 16, 2012. I was at a pool tourney in Georgetown Texas and there was a DJ and a lady on the dance floor dancing while waist hooping. She was moving her feet and dancing in the hoop. I was so entranced. I tried hooping for the first and was able waist hoop but couldn’t dance or move my feet at all. So I went home and looked up hooping and found a meet-up in east Austin went and began hooping every day. I fell in love.
What do you love about the experience of performing?
Performing is something I have always enjoyed. I have been performed on the flute since I was 8 years old. I enjoy all aspects of performing including the mental preparation, the rehearsals, the moments before and the joy of spreading happiness with my performance afterwards.
How has being a part of the flow community touched your life? How can the flow community make an impact and how do you see yourself being a part of it?
I love being part of the flow community! It’s so much to share knowledge, to teach, to perform, to connect with others via shape manipulations.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their flow journey? Which tutorials or guiding principles helped you along the way?
Enjoy the process of learning. Be patient with yourself when learning new skills. Look to others that inspire you with your prop of choice and see if they offer lessons or tutorials. Find flow gatherings in your area and attend workshops and support other flow artists.
Where do you aim to hone your skills in 2019? Have you taken on any new props or specialties recently?
In 2019, I wish to smooth out my flow more and unlock many more illusionary twin skills. I will most likely be sticking with twins. Lol.
Background
What are your main props/specialties?
Double hoops (sometimes you will catch me doing more or less, but mostly doubles)
Where do you like to practice the most?
24 hour fitness, small pubs while waiting to play pool, and local parks and pretty places.
Is there a particular aspect about the hooping or flow community that you’re passionate about? How do you envision your influence?
I love to teach others! I am very passionate about it and have been a teacher of the flute for over 20 years so it’s something I really enjoy. The joy of teaching someone a skill and then seeing their face when they achieve it, is the most amazing feeling ever! I also love performing. It is always a huge learning experience and I love the challenge. I envision my influence to be mostly in the tech world of twin hoops teaching and performing.
Do you have any flow related personal successes that you’d like to share?
I really feel that my flow is taking a unique turn toward more continuous type skills that illusionary and I am so excited about that! I feel that going to all the flow festivals over the last few years have really opened up my mind to new shapes and patterns especially from other styles.
In a nutshell, how would you describe your unique style of flow? Are there artists or dance styles that you take inspiration from?
I am a connoisseur of shape manipulation with two hoops with a slight bit of sass and dance flare. I have taken much inspiration, especially in the beginning of my hoop journey, from Caterina Suttin. Nowadays I am influenced by many incredible hoopers!! Including albinoplant, misshoopdidoo, techswan, zachattack, lilachupahoops, mosquisha, allihartdance just to name a few.
Are you a part of a flow community or flow meet-up? Are there any local flow gatherings near you?
There are, but due to my pool (billiards) league schedule and the distance to downtown Austin from my house, I usually don’t attend the weekly meet-ups anymore. I do however get out to all the hoop workshops in the area and I enjoy hosting all the hoopers!
Are you an active performer?
I perform at most festivals I attend. This year I performed at all the @flowfests including Austin, Seattle, Chicago, Ft. Lauderdale. I also performed at Playthink festival.
Do you teach, mentor or create tutorials?
