Sizing Questions

It’s good to purchase a hoop size that is closest to the size of the hoop that you’re most comfortable with your regular hoop size. The Fire Wicks will add about 5 inches to each end of the hoop, for a total of 10 inches added to the clearance of your hoop. Your regular sized hoop or a hoop little smaller is a good option for choosing a size.

There’s not one single answer to that question, but it’s partially dependent on skill level. The golden rule of hoop sizing is: bigger, heavier hoops are easier to keep up and slower to hoop with. Smaller hoops are lighter and more versatile for dance moves, but more challenging to keep up while core hooping.

For all the details, refer to our Hoop Sizing Guide.

Seamless Conversion for Classic Hoops

While we may not be able to re-size Classic hoops, we now offer a Seamless Conversion for hoops with an outer cuff. Why can’t the hoops be re-sized? Since the light spacing, build method and counterweights are set specifically to each size it would cost as much a new hoop!

We would instead be happy to offer you a discount on a new hoop if you are a returning customer! You can write in using the Other option on the main Contact Form.

We frequently see successful transactions of hoopers selling their used Moodhoops through our Facebook page! With an audience of over 125,000+ and growing, there’s sure to be a happy hopper who would love to get your hoop at a discounted price 🙂

Children’s Hoop Sizing

  • 29.5 inches (age 3-6)
  • 34 inches (age 6-9)
  • LED hoops are meant to be operated by adults. Insertion, removal, and charging of the batteries should only be done by adults. Like any exercise toy, overuse or careless use could result in personal injury.

LED Hoops are an extra special treat for children and can inspire and motivate to learn new tricks and keep going with hooping.

MoodHoops measures all hoops and tubing thicknesses using the Outer Diameter measurement (OD).

Since tubing has both an Outer Diameter and an Inner Diameter, you may see other hoop companies refer to sizes by ID rather than OD.

If you are unsure about how to convert the size, please contact us with your desired measurement and tubing thickness and we will help you convert it 🙂

Polypro vs HDPE Tubing

Important Polypro Tips and Instructions

Just starting a hooping sesh and it’s a bit chilly where you are? If you’re outside and it’s a cold day, it may be best to hoop indoors where the ambient temperature is higher. Hooping indoors in a chilly room can also have the same effect though! Hooping in cold temperatures increases the chance of the tubing becoming cracked, even from normal hooping moves. Cracked, bent or kinked tubing is not covered by the Warranty.

Avoid strong impacts against hard surfaces or sudden falls, to keep the hoop in the best shape. Polypro tubing is more brittle than the tubing used for many day hoops or LED hoops. Whereas a normal hoop will kink if you bend it, or bounce back when it’s smashed, polypro will crack.

Even without what you may perceive is a low temperature, polypro tubing in general is just more brittle. Many times it’s easily avoidable not to hoop in a cold environment, but sometimes the ability for polypro to crack can really take you by surprise.

Avoid storing your hoop in environments with extreme hot or cold temperatures.

Polypro LED Hoops vs Polypro Day Hoops:
Polypro is great for day hoops because it is lighter by volume than normal HDPE tubing. This gives you a silky-smooth, lightning-fast hoop for practice and performance. For LED hoops however, it has some disadvantages that you should be aware of.

Since LED hoops have batteries and counterweights inside, the lightness of polypro is not as noticeable from an HDPE hoop. Whereas HDPE tubing is flexible and absorbs impacts well, polypro tubing is brittle and prone to cracking on impacts or when extremely flexed. The added weight of LEDs, batteries, and counterweights only increases the chance of cracking.

With polypro LED hoops, certain moves like breaks, reversals, or even regular hooping can cause the tubing to crack. Also, some sort of trauma to the hoop, like a high impact hit or landing on it accidentally when trying to jump through it, is what can result in the hoop tubing becoming cracked.

If you are at all unsure about whether you want your hoop in polypro tubing, HDPE is definitely the better choice! There’s a reason why HDPE tubing is our default for LED hoops, while Polypro is our default for lightweight day hoops 🙂

When the hoop is in mid to high speed motion the tubing color difference is almost indistinguishable. When the hoop is moving slower you can see that the tubing is different and may notice a slight tint. The color difference will be the most notable when the hoop is on an all white setting. The hoop on the bottom is in clear polypro tubing on the white setting.

Check out the chart below to see eight differences between HDPE and polypro tubing
Regarding whether choosing polypro tubing changes the weight of the hoop, it does, but not by very much. You can see in the 3/4″ weights chart that the difference between the HDPE and polypro option is pretty small. And with the volume of the 5/8″ tubing, battery, and components of the hoop also being less than a 3/4″ hoop, the weight difference between the HDPE and polypro option is even less noticeable. When it comes to the difference of feel with a polypro hoop, there’s different ways people seem to describe it in comparison to HDPE. Some hoopers find polypro to be stiffer, while others find it to be more flexible.

The thickness of the tubing also affects the feel of both hoop polypro and HDPE hoops. With any 5/8″ hoop you’ll find that it’s more flexible than 3/4″ tubing. So in addition to the weight of the hoop it’s good to think about what kind of hooping style you’d like to use with the hoop. 3/4″ tubing is better for faster, more aggressive moves, while 5/8″ has a little more give you it. The same moves in a 5/8″ hoop you’d want to soften in 5/8″ so as not to warp the shape, or potentially kink the hoop.

With any polypro hoop through it’s important to remember that polypro tubing is known to be more brittle than HDPE, especially in cold weather and lower temperatures. The tubing is more clear, so the lights will shine through more crisply, as the HDPE has a subtle diffusing effect. But the HDPE is a more resilient tubing overall, and the light diffusion is still very pretty 🙂 There’s high points for each tubing type, but we still recommend HDPE as the default option for LED hoops, and polypro as a wonderful option for polypro day hoops 🙂

Hopefully this helps to shine a light on the differences between polypro and HDPE tubing 🙂

If you are at all unsure about whether you want a PolyPro LED hoop, just get a normal hoop! There’s a reason why HDPE is our default for LED hoops, while PolyPro is our default for lightweight day hoops 🙂

🔥 The ever loved Flame Pattern! 🔥
The flame pattern can be found by turning on the hoop in Motif mode (hoop blinks pink) then using the remote to jump to the pattern. You can jump to different parts of the hoop’s pattern menu by pressing the Quick Select button ⚡️

On the first column on the left side of the remote you’ll see the Quick Select button. Press ‘Quick Select’ then press the ‘yellow button/#3’ and you will jump to the ‘yellow’ part of the menu. Then press ‘Next’ 5 times and you’ll be on the flame pattern 😊

Quickly Jump to your favorite patterns once you know where they are in the menu!
As you click Next on the remote you will see that the hoop blinks a color at the change to each next pattern. This is telling you what part of the menu you are in.

Reds and warm color blinks are for patterns towards the beginning of the menu, cooler colors are in the middle, with the purple and pink color blinks being towards the end of the menu, before starting over again.

If you want to find out where you are in the hoop’s Motif menu you can press the Next button (to see what color the hoop blinks back at you), then press the Stop/Back button to return to the pattern you were just on. From there you can change the colors of that pattern and Save to find it easily later.

The FutureHoop Pro cannot be made in 5/8 in. tubing, as the components cannot currently fit into the small space inside the tubing.

The FutureHoop Remote *can* be made in 5/8 in. tubing and has the exact same programming and features as the FutureHoop Pro! The main difference between the Pro and Remote hoop models is that the Pro hoop charges via USB and mas internal batteries, while the Remote hoop has a removable battery to power the hoop.

The Saved Mode bank of each hoop allows you to save 14 of your favorite patterns to the hoop 🙂 Saved patterns can be made from Motifs, Spirals, customized Galaxy colors, Iso or Pop menus. Using the remote and having the hoops close together, you can program the Saved modes into the hoops at the same time, though it might be easier to do one hoop at a time.

In order to get the hoops to be in sync, you would need to turn them on at the same time in the ‘Saved Mode’. The patterns in the Saved menu will start on a 6 second pattern change that go in linear order of the numbered saved slots. As long as all of the hoops are turned on at the same time in the same mode, they should display their patterns in sync.

Once you have the patterns in the Saved slots, the order of the patterns will display in the same order each time you go into the Saved modes. Even if you turned off the hoop in the middle of the pattern cycle, they would still start from the beginning of the modes when you go into the Saved modes menu in the saved mode, these patterns automatically change to the next saved pattern every six seconds.

To use the hoop on/off button, instead of the remote, to get to the Saved menu, click the hoop on and off until you reach the Blizzard special mode (blinks an aqua blue). This is the last special mode in the click-through menu until it is the Saved mode (blinks yellow). All hoops should have their last click-through mode have been Blizzard, then turned off. This will allow the hoop to go directly into the Saved mode when it is turned on using the on/off button next.

Once you have come across the pattern that you would like to save, press the ‘Save’ button. The hoop will blink back pink to let you know it is in Save mode and is ready to receive the info from your remote button press as to which Save slot number it will be saved into. Then, press a number, 1-14, to store the pattern in that numbered save slot. The hoop will blink back the color of the numbered button that you just saved the pattern to, to confirm that you have saved it to that slot.

You can save up to 14 patterns to the hoop, that will continue to display in a loop when the hoop is turned on to the Saved mode.

The FutureHoop Pro and FutureHoop Remote hoops use the same software and both come with remote controls. The remote controls give you full access to manipulate and save patterns on the hoop, as well as set changes to a beat. The patterns and usability between the Pro and Remote FutureHoops are the same, the only difference is how the hoops are powered, removable battery (Remote) or micro USB (Pro).

The FutureHoop Shuffle and Remote have a removable battery design that allows you to swap in a new battery when the current one runs out of juice. Each battery will last 2-3 hours, depending on which Special Mode you’re in.

FutureHoop Shuffle:

The FutureHoop Shuffle changes the pattern, colors and animation style every 6 seconds in 4 of the 6 Special Modes, giving you hooping experience that is both familiar and refreshing. The on/off switch of the hoop is used to click through to the next Special Mode. The patterns shuffle continuously, but don’t allow stopping on a pattern, keeping the focus on a more ready-to-play design, so you can focus on your flow. There are 6 Special Modes in the FutureHoop Shuffle: Motif, Spiral, Iso, Galaxy, Pop, and Pixie.

FutureHoop Remote:

The FutureHoop Remote uses the same remote controls as the FutureHoop Pro and comes with all of the same patterns and usability. The main difference is that the FutureHoop Pro has internal batteries and can only be recharged using a USB cord. The on/off mechanism, as well as the way to change through to the next Special Mode, even if you don’t have your remote controls, is to turn the hoop off and then on again. This will allow you to navigate through the click-through menus that are the Special Modes.

FutureHoop Pro:

The FutureHoop Pro uses the same remote controls as the FutureHoop Remote and comes with all of the same patterns and usability. The FutureHoop Pro uses internal batteries that cannot be removed.

Removable Battery design:

The FutureHoop Shuffle and Remote uses a removable battery design that allows you to swap in a new battery when the current one runs out of juice. Each battery will last 2-3 hours, depending on which Special Mode you’re in.

Grip:

FutureHoop Remote & Pro come with 3M grip tape along the inner ring of the hoops. These hoops use sensors to be able to pick up the button press signals from the remote controls.
FutureHoop Shuffle comes with hoop wax applied. Write in to us before you order, or right after you’ve placed your order, and we’d be happy to make the change if you don’t want your hoop to be waxed.

Category: FutureHoop

FutureHoop Remote, FutureHoop Pro and FutureMinis use sensors to communicate with the remote controls. It’s best not to use regular grip/gaffer tape with this hoop, as the tape (whether in black or white) blocks the signal and shortens the signal distance.

FutureHoop Shuffle does not have sensors or remotes and can use any kind of grip tape.

Sanding and waxing the hoop does not affect the signal and is the best option for hoop grip without using tape that does not interrupt the remote control signal.

Our hoops are shipped to you with a ‘transport cuff’ which allows a hoop to be carefully fully coiled. Your hoop will arrive coiled this way. The outer cuff is not attached and is for transport purposes only. The cuff provides stability when the hoop is in a coiled shape, but it should be completely removed before attempting to uncoil or open the hoop.

Since the hoops open up, you can partially collapse the hoop if you’re unsure about fully coiling it. Once the hoop is partially collapsed you can add zip ties in several places along the coiled tubing to keep it in a coiled shape.

Please remember that kinked or cracked tubing is not covered by our warranty, so coiling your hoop should be done carefully and is at your own risk. Some of the smaller sizes, especially in stiffer polypro tubing, can be a little more difficult to coil. If your tubing needs to be replaced just write in to us and we’re happy to get you fixed up and sent back to you quickly 🙂

LED hoops

All LED MoodHoops except Futurehoop Pro are 2-point counterbalanced by default. 2-point means the battery is one point, and there is a counterweight on the opposite side of the battery. We choose 2-point counterbalancing by default because it provides a counterweight while also keeping the hoop the lightest weight possible. If you would like 3-point counterbalancing (meaning the battery is one point, plus one counterweight a third of the way around the hoop, plus another counterweight two-thirds around the hoop) please write in and we can perform this for you. 3-point counterbalancing will add approximately 1 ounce to the weight of your hoop.

Futurehoop Pro is 3-point counterbalanced due to the 3 internal batteries. The 3 batteries are spaced evenly around the hoop just like the 3-point counterbalancing method described above.

Lithium-ion batteries are happiest when stored at about half charge if you know they will be sitting for a long period of time.

If you know you’ll be using your hoop, poi, wand, fans, or staff again soon then it’s best to charge it up so that you can get the full play time with it the next time you pick it up 🙂 If you’re going to be away from your prop for a while it’s good to keep your hoop a little below full charge.

The Festival Hoop uses the same great build features as a classic MoodHoop, with a removable battery and fully collapsible design.

Festival Hoops use less power by using less LEDs, which makes them great for beginners, outdoor events or all-night parties.

Classic MoodHoop features:

  • comes in many sizes and colors
  • customizable
  • more LEDs

Festival Hoop features:

  • comes in one size and select designs, not customizable
  • less LEDs
  • very good good battery life

One size and style simplicity is what helps us to keep the price low for this great hoop. This hoop is a fun, durable build that’s great for a beginner, children, or as an inexpensive hoop to take to festivals and events.

Sizes 38″ and 42″ OD are created 24 LEDs.

Hoops that have a color pattern with a repeat of 3, 6, 8, or 12 LEDs are created with 24 LEDs.

3/4″ & 5/8″ hoops that have a color patterns with a repeat of 2 or 4 LEDs are created with 20 LEDs. Less LEDs are best on battery life.

If you’re having difficulty closing your hoop, there’s an easy fix for this 🙂 Hard to see dirt or debris can get into the hoop where it slides in, causing the hoop to become difficult to open or close.

First take a moment to clean out the inner part of the outer cuff from any debris. Also wipe off the part of the hoop that slips into the outer cuff. Then take a small amount of Vaseline and apply it to the part of the hoop that slides into the cuff. Move it back and forth a couple of times and it should be able to slide easier. This little bit of cleaning and maintenance should make the tightness go away 🙂

Please give this a try, as this is what will make it easier in most cases. It’s also good to check the shape of the tubing on the part of the hoop body that slips into the outer cuff. If the tubing end was compressed for some reason, this could also be why it’s become more difficult. To fix this, use your hands, or someone with a strong grip, to squeeze the end of the tubing in the opposite direction of the mis-shaped part. Meaning, if the tube end is slightly oval-shaped, squeeze it in the direction so that the ends sticking out are getting pushed back in to make a more complete circle.

Moodhoops come in two different types of tubing, HDPE & Polypro, and 3 different tubing sizes, 7/8″, 3/4″ and 5/8″ for LED hula hoops. All tubing widths are measured by the Outer Diameter (OD).

LED Moodhoops Sizes

  • 3/4″ hoops are available in 18″ OD to 38″ OD (polypro & HDPE)
  • 5/8″ hoops are available in sizes 23″ OD to 33″ OD (polypro & HDPE)
  • 7/8″ hoops are available in 38″ OD to 42″ OD (not available in polypro)
  • Full size hoops are 24″ OD to 42″ OD. Mini hoops are 18″ OD to 23″ OD.

Batteries

The lithium-ion batteries that light up your LED hoop have three times the power of the normal batteries that you can find in the grocery store. These special batteries need extra care, maintenance, and consideration during use, storage, and transport.

Visit our Battery Safety and Care page for important details.

Yes, all MoodHoops use rechargeable Li-Ion batteries.

Remember that even rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan.

You should purchase backup batteries so you’re never out of charge at a bad moment (like during a night out dancing, or while entertaining friends).

Category: Batteries

Yes! That just means your battery is almost done charging, and it will soon be fully green 🙂

Category: Batteries

Please review our Battery Safety page, which contains VERY important information regarding Battery Safety, Care, and Charging. Please also refer to the Instruction Manual that is sent with each hoop.

MoodHoops do not work with regular, store bought rechargeable batteries (NiMh). All MoodHoops can use only a single specialty lithium-ion battery (Li-ion) that cannot be purchased locally, and have special use and safety considerations.

These lithium-ion batteries have more voltage than regular, store-bought NiMh rechargeable batteries and should never be put into any other device.

If you are attempting to use other batteries than the ones provided with your hoop, you most likely have purchased regular NiMh AA rechargeable batteries, as the specialty Lithium-ion batteries used in Moodhoops are not available in most local stores. Regular AA alkaline batteries only put out 1/3 of the power needed to properly light up your Moodhoop, so these will not work.

We offer extra and replacement batteries as singles or in 3-packs. Lithium-ion batteries can be purchased for your MoodHoop in our store here: http://moodhoops.com/shop/batteries

There are a few ways to get your patterns to sync on your FuturePoi or FutureStaff to create a choreographed routine. The Remote and XL models come with a remote control to give you fine-grained control over the change speed, patterns displayed, as well as 14 Save slots for Motifs or Waveform patterns.

The remotes work on FuturePoi Remote & XL and FutureStaff Remote & XL. Line up all the lights you’re trying to sync together and use the remote to start them at the beginning of the same mode..

Whether you have 2, 4, or more pairs of lights, the separate units will be able to sync with each other in several different ways. Even without the remote, at the start up of 4 modes (Motif, Waveforms, Saved, and Sync) the poi start on the same pattern and change every 6 seconds, if they are all turned on at the same time. With the remotes this is even easier because you can just press a button to change them to the beginning of a mode, so their patterns changes will time up at every 6 seconds. You can change the time interval by using the Tap Tempo button on any of those 4 modes.

Sync mode has the same identical string of patterns that it starts at every time, so in this mode all the poi will be identical. This string of patterns will match up with any FuturePoi Shuffle, Remote, XL, or Lite Poi so all the units, if turned on at the same time, will be able to sync patterns with each other at a 6 second change interval.

For your Saved modes you have 14 save slots for your favorite patterns. The save slots come pre-loaded with some of our favorites and can easily be changed. Once you have your Saved modes loaded, by clicking the Next Saved button you can set the poi to play at the beginning of the Saved Modes and they will sync changes at every 6 seconds. If you press the Next Saved button multiple times in succession you will cycle through each of your saved modes and loop around to the beginning and start the saved 14 patterns over again. At the start up of a mode you can also leave it at its automatic 6 second shuffle, or you can use the Tap Tempo button to make them change with different timing.

For your Saved modes, when it comes to programming the colors of the patterns to be the same across the different units you will use the Random Colors button to get colors that are the same or similar across the different poi. To save the colors for each pattern you will need to turn off all of the poi except for one while programming and then save each mode, one at a time. This takes a little bit of time, but once it’s in there it’s awesome 🙂

Motif mode has a partial sync ability, but it also has some fun variety. The pattern designs are in the same order on each poi when in Motif mode, but the colors and animation effects (big, small, oscillating) are randomized between each unit. This mode also automatically starts at a 6 second shuffle. In Motif mode you can have your poi changing at the same with the same patterns, but the colors and effects are just a little different on each one. Use Tap Tempo to set the Motifs to change at different time intervals. The Waveform patterns can be changed and saved in the same way, they are just in their own mode bank.

XL Staff – the last 14 inches light up on each end (shown below)

What is the difference between FuturePoi Lite & FuturePoi Shuffle?

Hardware
  • Shuffle has a higher resolution (3.5 LEDs per inch) and is housed in a diffused polycarbonate tubing, which makes the lights appear a little softer.
  • Lite has a lower resolution (2.5 LEDs per inch) than the Shuffle and is housed in a clear polycarbonate tubing, which makes the lights crisper and can be interpreted as being brighter.
  • FuturePoi Lite is not made to be attached to a staff, like the more modular design of the FuturePoi Shuffle.
Software
  • FuturePoi Shuffle will display the same pattern on each light element, but the drawing effects (colors & display field or "stretch") are different on each one.
  • With the FuturePoi Lite, both light elements will display identical patterns.

What's the difference between Motif and Sync mode?

Sync mode allows you to match up your poi patterns with any other FuturePoi model. Motif mode, and any mode on the FuturePoi Lite, will always match to each other and other FuturePoi Lite.

Looking to purchase a FuturePoi/Staff Attachment piece in a custom size?

Please contact us through this form and we can answer any questions about a custom sized Staff attachment piece and other options 🙂

In FuturePoi/FutureStaff Shuffle/Lite graphical settings randomize in the click-through modes and shuffle the pattern continuously every 6 seconds. The pattern generator shuffles automatically so you can focus on your flow.

The poi are turned Off then On again to change modes. To sync up change rate of the FuturePoi without a remote, simply turn them on at the same time in the same Special Mode.

Use Sync mode in any of the models by turning them on at the same time. If timed correctly in Sync mode you can have multiple units, or just the pair, displaying identical patterns and changing at the same rate.

To control the change rate, animation speed and color settings, get the FuturePoi Remote or XL.

  • 3/4″ FutureHoop Minis are available in 22″ and 23″ OD.
  • 3/4″ Classic Minis are available in 18″ OD to 23″ OD.
  • 5/8″ Classic Minis are available in 23″ OD only.

Taped day hoops will often use black irrigation tubing (PE), which can be found at hardware stores, and are measured by the Inner Diameter (ID). Check out the picture above for more detail.

FutureHoops have the option to upgrade to translucent color polypro tubing.

Does the tubing color affect the lights?

When the hoop is in mid to high speed motion the tubing color difference is almost indistinguishable. When the hoop is moving slower you can see that the tubing is different and may notice a slight tint.

The color difference will be the most notable when the hoop is on an all white setting.

Fire Toys

Each fan includes 2 rings: one for gunslinger style spinning, and one for thumb spinning. One of the fan spinners that works with us suggested that the small ring above the slightly larger one for your thumb is for spinning moves, and the larger ring for easy 2 to 3 finger grips as you try tosses or gunslinger moves.

For traditional grip, she took photos to show you how she holds them. It feels like a nice secure grip that doesn’t let the fingers get trapped, if you are just doing large arm movements and dancing with the fans.

Since these are large wicks, and are a bit closer to the the grip area (especially if you use a larger range like she does) you may want to look into kevlar heat/ fire resistant gloves.

SAFETY FIRST!
Playing with fire is INHERENTLY DANGEROUS, and MoodHoops cannot be held liable for any injury or property damage incurred through the use of these products. If you can’t take full responsibility for the consequences of your fire spinning, don’t spin fire. Even when following all safety guidelines, fire performance could result in accidental property damage, injury, or death.
Read the NAFAA Performer Safety Guidelines for points you may not have considered, though no single document should be considered as a comprehensive fire safety and fuel safety education.
You should never handle fuel and spin fire without the following:
  • Supervision of an experienced fire performer and spotter.
  • Prior training on fuel safety and fire performance safety.
  • Necessary safety equipment and clothing.
  • An expert level of experience performing with the fire tool you will use (having practiced with it unlit).

Below are some common sense warnings to guide your own research about fire safety and fuel safety. These guidelines are not to be taken as a comprehensive safety education.

  • Do not use explosive fuels. (Gasoline is explosive) Do plenty of research on the differences between different fuels.  If you are unsure which fuel to use, do not attempt to perform.
  • Do not leave fuel in open containers while performing. An errant cigarette ash could start a fire.
  • Fuel the wick far away from the lighting and performance area.
  • Spin excess fuel off of the wick, far away from the lighting and performance area.
  • Do not light your own wicks.
  • Do not bring freshly extinguished wicks near a fuel container.
  • Do not submerge freshly extinguished wicks into fuel.

If you’ve just checked out for FutureHoop or Classic hoop Services you’re probably wondering where to send your hoop!

Please allow 1 business day for Customer Service to email you complete instructions for how to send in your hoop.

For starts, here’s some info on how to get your hoop ready for shipment:
If you no longer have the box the hoop came in you can use two large, flat pieces of cardboard, approx 20″ x 20″ x 2”, and tape around the edges with the hoop inside. This will be sturdy enough to send your hoop in.
