Flow Journey

When did you begin your journey into the flow arts, and how were you inspired to start?

I started my hoop journey 5 years ago and have been performing professionally for 3. I got my first LED hoop from moodhoops when I first started (before the futurehoop was created). Since then, I’ve had 3 different future hoops and always go back to this company because of the quality and the service. I was inspired by seeing others and eventually decided to teach myself!

Why do you love the experience of performing?

I love giving the crowd a more engaging aspect to the show, especially in a day and age where they mostly stare at a DJ pushing buttons in front of flashing screens. I love engaging with the crowd and helping them immerse into the full experience.

How has being a part of the flow community touched your life? How can the flow community make an impact and how do you see yourself being a part of it?

Being a part of the flow community has given me a family. I was always the weird girl in high school and getting into hula hooping at 17 just made me weirder to most people until I met my flow and circus family! I really found what I loved and where I belonged.

Background

What are your main props/specialties?

I mostly use a single hoop. I incorporate gogo-esque style moves and take pride in being able to flow along with the music well. My specialty and what I wow people the most with is my foot and acro hooping.

In a nutshell, how would you describe your unique style of flow? Are there artists or dance styles that you take inspiration from?

I focus more on meeting the vibe or beat of the music than being too overly technical. I really put my heart and soul into what I do and my flow changes day to day. For performing, I definitely am more gogo style oriented and love crowd interaction.

Community Involvement

Are you a part of a flow community or flow meet-up? Are there any local flow gatherings near you?

I am a part of Extraordinary Arts LLC and we have hosted free hoop day events in the past where we have a showcase of local hoopers, provide workshops, etc.

What has 2016 been for you in terms of going to festivals, retreats, workshops, events, burns, etc?

2016 has been my most gig filled year yet. I perform every Saturday in Boston unless I’m traveling or need a rare day off. For festivals, I took time off this year to really work on my craft and am in the process of creating a hula hoop fitness program of my own since I now work at a gym. I did one on one lessons with a 14 year old autistic girl over the summer once a week for free because her mom expressed it was one of her interests. I hope to do more community outreach in the future because there is no better feeling (performing is obviously a close second).

Where will you be in 2017? Which festivals/performance events/flow retreats are you planning to attend this coming year? Will you be attending as a performer?

My performance troupe just sent out our concepts for Electric Forest! We are awaiting approval on the different concept ideas, but will definitely be there! I’m still waiting for more apps to come out for festivals before I confirm anything.

Find Me!

At which festivals/events/retreats can you be found in 2017?

My performance troupe just sent out our concepts for Electric Forest! We are awaiting approval on the different concept ideas, but will definitely be there! I’m still waiting for more apps to come out for festivals before I confirm anything.

Are you an active performer?

Yes! I have a residency at the largest club in Boston (Royale Boston). I have been there since March 2014. I also do a lot of freelance work for travelling college shows and corporate events.

Where do you aim to hone your skills in 2017? Have you taken on any new props or specialties recently?

As far as hooping, I hope to continue to work on my floor combos/foot hooping abilities. I really want to learn fans! I played with a friends recently and am obsessed!
